Constitutional changes

Students,

Changes to the Student Senate Constitution have been proposed by the Full Senate as described in this post.  These changes will be voted on by students during the Co-President elections which will take place later this month early March.  These changes include:

• Non-voting executives/committee chairs will be appointed at the end of the academic year preceding their term rather than at the first Full Senate meeting.
• Students in the College-owned houses will now be constituents of Student Senate off-campus representatives.  The ILS representative position will be removed, and students residing in the Swedish House will be constituents of the Carlson International Center Senator.
• Clarification of student “class.”
• Student Senate may fix grammatical/spelling errors in the Constitution without requiring a vote from the student body (with unanimous vote during a Full Senate meeting.)
• The Student Senate administrative director will receive a stipend for his/her work.

Actual text that will be changed:

C, Article III – Composition, Line 4 – Non-Voting Executives, add:  “These positions will assume their seats at the end of the academic year preceding their term.  Vacancies of these positions must absolutely be filled in a timely manner.”

C, Article I – Definitions, Line 8, Strike all current text and insert “College Owned Houses: These houses will be the constituents of the Off Campus Representatives.   These houses include, but are not limited to: the Lundgren House, the Johnson House, the Peterson House, the Ten-O-Nine House, the Adolphson House, the Walker House, and others.”

C, Strike, Article III – Composition, Line 8 – Hall Senators, Strike: ILS Senator

C, Insert, Line 11 – Swedish House Representation – The Swedish House will be constituents of the Carlson International Center Senator.

C, Article I – Definitions, add Line 13: “Class: The class of each student for the purpose of the Senate will be class-in-residency.  Any student beyond their fourth year will therefore not have a Class representative, but may be represented by a Hall representative or International representative as appropriate.”

C, Article III – Composition, Line 5 – Chairs, Add:  “These positions will assume their seats at the end of the academic year preceding their term.  Vacancies of these positions must absolutely be filled in a timely manner.”

C, Article VIII – Amendments to the Constitution, add Line 5:  “The Senate may make spelling, grammatical, or formatting corrections to the Constitution or By-Laws in one meeting by first a unanimous vote recognizing it as a spelling, grammatical, or formatting change, as well as a two-thirds vote of the body in favor of the change.”
